Sound

Sound

Diegetic sound - This is any sound presented as originated from source within the film's world. E.g. voices of characters or sounds made by objects in the story.

Non-digetic sound - This is represented as coming from the a source outside story space. E.g. narrator's commentary, sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect or mood music.

Parallel Sound - This is when the sound we hear should suit the image on screen. For example in a horror film, if a murder was to be attempted, dark, fast paced music would suit the action.

Contrapuntal Sound - This is when the sound on the screen does not match the action, For example in a thriller, if a shark was about to attack a young girl in the sea, a slow classical piece of music would not suit the action.
